 sales@emirys.com

- Is included bandiwtdh enough for me?
It should be more then enough for a web site that is not excessive in size (amount of pages) or daily traffic. For your site to use more then 50GB of transfer/bandwidth your site would have to be receiving a large amount of visitors on a daily basis and/or have many pages that are being accessed.

Example: Every time one of your web pages is viewed by someone on the internet, the size of that page goes towards your bandwidth usage. Below is an example of how many times a page would have to be viewed to reach 50GB of transfer

page size 100kb = 524 288 views
page size 200kb = 262 144 views

- Password protected directories

The Password Protect Directory feature in your Control Panel allows you to restrict access to a particular directory within your account and allow access by assigning usernames and passwords to individuals that you choose to allow such access.

To access this feature click on Web Protect. You will be asked to select the directory that you want to protect, simply click the text link of the directory name and you will be taken to the screen where you complete the specifics for user information.

You will need to enter a unique name (Protected Resource Name) for this password protection in the upper section of the screen. The name must be a single word or phase with no spaces. Enter the name and click the save button. Now you are ready to add users that can have access to the specific directory.

To add a new user, simply input the username and password and click Save. You will be taken to a screen that will confirm the new user and you can click the link on the bottom of the screen to go back and add more users.

To change a password for a user, simply input the username and the new password for the user and click Save.

NOTE: This feature might not work with Front Page Extensions Installed.

NOTE: Usernames and passwords MUST be from 6 to 8 characters long. Any less than 6 or greater than 8 will cause your protected directory cease to function and you will receive an error when trying to enter the directory.

To delete a user, select the user from the list and click the Delete button.

- File Manager

The File Manager allows you to manage your site through HTML, rather than an FTP tool or other third-party application. You can upload, create or delete files, organize files in folders, and change file permissions. - The FTP Manager
Virtual domain account users whose plans include Anonymous FTP can allow anonymous FTP access to visitors wishing to download or upload files to your web site as if you were running your own FTP server. You can enable (and disable) ANON FTP access within the FTP Feature inside your Control Panel.

If you are going to allow people to upload files to your site, make sure you keep track of your disk space usage via your Control Panel.

Do not allow your disk space usage to get too close to your maximum disk space allocation or you may experience problems accessing your site via FrontPage and/or be unable to upload or modify files.

Once you enable ANON FTP in your Control Panel, files can be accessed anonymously via an FTP client.

Anonymous visitors wishing to access your site via FTP must use your domain name as the FTP hostname, username of anonymous and password of guest.

Your anonymous FTP site is completely different from your website. When people FTP to your domain anonymously, they will see the following directories:

bin/
dev/
etc/
incoming/
lib/
pub/

"pub" is where you should put all your anonymously accessible files.
"incoming" is for the anonymous users to upload files.

For security the following applies

Only the incoming directory can be written by anonymous users
Sub-directories cannot be created by anonymous users
The incoming directory is not readable by anonymous users

To access the anonymous FTP site via the web, use the following address: ftp://yourdomain.com/pub/

- Backup

The backup option will allow you to backup and compress your files and databases. It also allows you to download your backup files to store at a secure location.

Note that the manual backups are placed in your folder, so it uses your space.

- Mime Types
This feature does not work with FrontPage. FrontPage users will need to add Mime Types from the FrontPage program itself.

The MIME Types option in your Control Panel allows you to set certain programs to be used for specific extensions.

In easier-to-understand terms, MIME Types helps your web server to identify what type of file is being requested by the browsers. For instance, when the web server gets a request from a browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape for a file that ends in .html, the web server knows that it is an HTML document because that extension is stored as a Mime Type. If the web server gets a request from a browser for a file that ends in .gif, the web server knows that it is an image because that too is stored as a Mime Type. This applies to every file, image, application, etc. that may be requested by a web browser. If the extension is not stored as a Mime Type, the web server will not recognize it and will not be able to assist the browser and that particular file type will not be viewable by the user.

Mime types are identified by the server by the following format:

subtype/type extension

For example adding the following two Mime Types will allow users to view ipx images on your web pages:

application/x-ipscript .ips
application/x-ipix .ipx

application identifies the subtype, x-ipscript identifies the application, and .ips identifies the extension used for that application.

- Changing your passwords
Changing Passwords for Control Panel, FTP and FrontPage.

When your website is initially setup you are provided with a temporary password to access your account.

It is extremely important to change this password immediately.

To change your password click on the Change Password option and follow the instructions. When changing your password, you need to choose a password with at least 6 character but with not more than 8 characters.

NOTE: The system is setup to detect easy passwords. It will not allow you to change your password unless you use a mixture of numeric and alphabetic characters.

When you change your password for accessing your Control Panel you are also changing your password for your FTP and FrontPage access, therefore you will need to change the password inside your FTP/FrontPage programs. You are also changing the password for your default email account (see changing email passwords below).

If you are unable to access your Control Panel because you've lost your password, you will need to submit a Technical Support Request form and provide us with a new password. Passwords are one way encrypted, therefore, we cannot access your password.

Changing Passwords for Email Accounts.

The password for your root (default) email account is the same as the password you use to access your account via your control panel or through ftp and FrontPage. To change the password for all other email accounts enter your control panel and click on Add/Remove Accounts. You will then see the option to change password to the right of each email account.

- MySQL Database

MySQL is a database engine that you can use with your web site. You can create a new database, and manage it from the control panel. You will be able to add/edit/delete tables, fields, and values. You can also run queries on the database if you need to.

To create a MySQL database:

  1. Click on the MySQL databases button on the home page.

  2. Enter the name of the database in the Db field.

  3. Click on the Add Db button. The database will be added to the /var/lib/mysql folder.

- Microsoft FrontPage
The FrontPage Extensions option allows you to install FrontPage extensions which are necessary in order to use FrontPage with your site. You can also verify that they are installed or remove them if you do not wish to use them anymore.

- E-Mail Accounts

You can set up as many POP (Post Office Protocol) e-mail accounts as you require, up to your maximum limit. Each one of these is in the standard e-mail formation of address@yourdomain.com. As with your default e-mail address, you can access these accounts through web mail or through your own offline e-mail application.

To add an e-mail account:

Click on the Add/Remove Accounts link in the Mail area.

Click on the Add Account link.

Enter the first part of the e-mail address and the password for the account in E-mail and Password fields.

Enter the maximum size limit of this mailbox in the Quota field, if required. The size limit is in megabytes. Not entering a number means that the mailbox size is only limited by the available disk space.

Click on the Create button.

Your new account has been added. Refer to Configuring Outlook Express to read e-mail if you want to use Outlook Express to read e-mail received by the new account.

- E-mail Filtering

You can block an e-mail using spam filters. There are many definitions of spam, but one particularly useful one is the following:

Spam is the electronic version of junk mail, and has been around since the Internet was created. E-mail filters are a way of filtering your e-mail to remove unwanted mail based on a variety of criteria. You can block any sort of e-mail, not just mail of a commercial nature. Blocked mail can be deleted automatically or sent to another e-mail address or script. These filters are quite flexible - some examples are provided after the instruction on how to add a spam filter below. All filters are cumulative.

To add an e-mail filter:

Click on the E-mail Filtering link in the Mail area.

Click on the Add Filter link.

Click on the required header field in the first drop-down list. These are the various fields in any e-mail message.

Click on the required filter action in the second drop-down list. This action will act on the text entered in the third field.

equals - match the text exactly (whole words only). "Credit" will block "Credit".

matches regex - matches the text based on regular expression (regex) rules. Regular expressions are a powerful but complex area. You do not need to use regular expression filters for most circumstances. Refer to these two good introductory tutorials - Using Regular Expressions and Learning to Use Regular Expressions - for more information.

contains - match the specified text in any circumstance. "porn" will block "porn" and "pornography".

begins with - match the specified text when it is the beginning of a word. "porn" will block "porn" and "pornography" but not "teenporn".

Enter the filter text in the third field. This text is case sensitive.

Enter the destination for the filtered e-mail in the Destination field. There are three separate types of destination:

Destroy the e-mail - Enter Discard in the field.

Redirect to another address - Enter the e-mail address to which to redirect the e-mail.

Redirect to a script - Enter the full script path on the machine that hosts your web site.

Click on the Activate button.

Example:

To redirect all e-mail from "john@paradise.net", enter: From, equals, john@paradise.net, david@corse.org.nz

To delete all e-mail from paradise.net, enter: From, contains, paradise.net, Discard

To delete all references to pornography, enter: Any Header, contains, porn, Discard

To discard all e-mail that Spam Assassin has marked as spam, enter: SpamAssassin Spam Header, begins with, yes, Discard

- Configuring Spam Assassin

You can change how Spam Assassin deals with spam. The following options are available:

  • required_hits - The number of e-mails received before a certain e-mail is considered spam.

  • rewrite_subject - Alter the subject line of spam e-mail. Enter 1 to enable or 0 to disable.

  • subject_tag - Text added to the subject line of spam e-mails. rewrite_subject must be enabled for this to work.

  • blacklist_from - Enter an e-mail address that you always want classified as spam. The asterix symbol (*) can be used as a wildcard.

  • whitelist_from - Enter an e-mail address that you never want classified as spam. The asterix symbol (*) can be used as a wildcard.

To configure Spam Assassin

  1. Click on the Spam Assassin link in the Mail area.

  2. Click on the Configure Spam Assassin button.

  3. Change the settings as required.

  4. Click on the Save button.

- Mail List

Mailman is a popular mailing list script. Mailing lists are an ideal tool for communication between far-flung participants and can be about anything you want. Mailman allows you to set up a mailing list with a large number of configurable options, such as who is on the list, where mailing lists messages are sent, and whether you include welcoming messages to new subscribers.

The Mailman documentation, which is incorporated into its Administration panel, is clear and helpful, and should be referred to for all questions about using the script. The instructions in this section deal with how to set up, modify, and delete a Mailman mailing list from your CPanel. You can can also refer to the Mailman home page for more information.

Note: It is a good idea to be aware of spam and its definition before setting up a mailing list - refer to E-mail Filtering for more information.

To add a mailing list:

  1. Click on the Mailing Lists link in the Mail area.

  2. Click on the Add Mailing List link.

  3. Enter the name of the mailing list in the List Name field, the password for the list in the Password field, and the domain it is for from the Domain drop-down list.

  4. Click on the Create button. The list is created in the /usr/local/cpanel/3rdparty/mailman/lists folder.

- Hot Link Prevention
Hotlinking is when another web site owner links directly to one or more of your images or multimedia files and includes it on their web page. Not only is this theft of your intellectual property, you are paying for the bandwidth used by that site.

CPanel can prevent hotlinking by only allowing named sites (such as your own web site) to access files on your site.

To prevent hotlinking:

  1. Click on the HotLink Protection button on the home page.

  2. Enter any other addresses that you will allow to access your site other than the provided defaults in the central area.

  3. Enter the protected extensions in the Extensions to allow field. Make sure you separate each extension with a comma.

  4. Enter the address to redirect any hotlinking to in the Url to Redirect to field.

  5. Click on the Allow direct requests tick box if you want to allow direct URL access to non-HTML files, such as images.

  6. Click on the Activate button.

- Ip Deny Manager
The IP Deny Manager enables you to block access to your web site from specific IP addresses. This is useful to remove nuisance surfers who use a large amount of bandwidth or to prevent hotlinking to your site (refer to HotLink Prevention article in cPanel for more information about hotlinking).

To add an IP address to the IP Deny Manager:

  1. Click on the IP Deny Manager button on the home page.

  2. Enter the IP address that you want to block in the IP Address field.

  3. Click on the Add button.

We update our Linux systems daily and we have a hardware firewall.

We also use SSL certificates for billing system, ordering system and cPanel system, so your personal details and passwords are protected.

We do not guarantee that our systems are 100% hackproof, there is no such system, we can only apply higher security measures.

- Why do I get Server 500 Error when using CGI?
The CGI application you are using is broken - you did not upload with a correct method or the files are wrong written.

- Difference between ASCII and BINARY
In short, html or text based files are supposed to be transferred in ASCII mode. Uploading them in Binary mode will append ^M's to the end of every line. In most cases, this is OK, with html files because your browser will ignore them. BUT, with other text files such as cgi scripts, uploading them in binary will damage them, thus causing a (server 500 error). This is because binary mode has added ^M's to the end of every line, which are not supposed to be in the program. This of course, is what causes the additional message of (Malformed Headers), which often displays at the bottom of the "Server 500" message when a CGI script has crashed.

Once again, BINARY mode is used for transferring executable programs, compressed files and all image/picture files. If you try to upload an image in ASCII mode, you observer a strange mess appearing on the page where the image is suppose to appear. ASCII mode in this case, has corrupted the binary coding in the jpeg or gif image. If this happens, just re-upload it in the Binary format

- Where should I upload CGI scripts?
We recommend uploading them in /public_html/cgi-bin/ folder.

- What is CHMOD?

By default, all files uploaded to the server automatically have permissions set to 644. The setting 644 is relatively safe, as it provides "Read" and "Write" access to the owner, while limiting the rest of the public to "Read Only" access.

When setting permissions for cgi scripts, the most common permissions setting is 755.   755 allows the owner "Read and Write" access, while allowing the Group and Public "Read and Execute" permissions. So what are we actually saying? In short, when users access your cgi script, the server has been instructed to grant them permissions to "Read and Execute" it.

Remember that a script is a program that must be processed by the server. As long as the script is written properly, you can safely allow users to execute it, and thus providing the desired results. For example, if they wanted to post a message to your wwwboard discussion forum, then they would need these permissions to execute wwwboard.pl, which would write their new message to an html file, which is displayed on the main forum.   The new message would reside in a directory on your site so other users could view it. Most cgi, perl and other scripts you'll be installing come complete with instructions telling you which permissions you'll need to set them to.

Setting permissions on files is a relatively simple task, however MAKE SURE you fully understand what it is you're allowing the public to do with your files. For example, some less experienced users often make the fatal mistake of simply setting ALL of their files to 777. While 777 will automatically allow executing privileges, it also allows full "READ, WRITE, and EXECUTION ability to the entire world!!!!

This is how web sites get hacked! While most visitors have good intentions, all it takes is one person who snoops about your files seeking an "Open Back Door." This could result is them gaining full access to your directories, which means they can do anything from deleting your entire site, to defacing it with obscenities.

- What does an affiliate do?
If you own a website or you have many friends on the internet, you may reffer them to our site. Every time a visitor sent by you to our site buys one of our plans, you get payd.

- How does affiliates system work?
When a potential buyer clicks through the affiliate url, a cookie is set in their browser. A "cookie" is more than just something tasty to munch on - on the internet it means a little piece of information that a website can store in the visitor's browser, and in this case Emirys Hosting stores the referring affiliate's username. This cookie remains in the visitor's browser if they leave your site, or even turn off their computer and log back in a month later. The only way it will be deleted is if the visitor deletes their cookies manually, reformats their hard drive, buys a new computer, etc...but for the average web surfer a cookie remains in their browser for a long time.
Then, when this visitor comes back to buy, after the sale is complete the affiliate gets paid.
